I’m sorry to hear that you have such sad, misguided optimism about what it means to be an “artist.”

My style, impeccable? I make small-scale, figurative, acrylic paintings on ready-made canvases in my spare time. I work in a pictorial style already well established by hundreds of thousands of illustrators.

Is being an artist enviable? Is it cool? Is it something extra special, something I should have forced my parents to throw down $240,000 for me to become? Art school would have been a terrible investment. If I were truly gifted with the skill and vision that it takes to be a successful artist, I shouldn’t need an institution to hold my hand and lead me through the creative process. 

The fact that you see my choice not to go to RISD as a waste of potential is incredibly presumptuous. Making a half dozen passably interesting paintings does not make me some kind of Bouguereau-in-seed. Basically, I find you incredibly naive.
